Personal Money, September 2009 Issue

How to say 'no' to your child while shopping
  1. Set expectation. Make it clear to them that no one is buying anything except the items on the shopping list.Set dates for when they can get gifts.
  2. Set rules. Explain that everyone has a budget.Explain that if you were to buy the toy for them, you may not have the money to pay for the parking fee.
  3. Offer alternatives.
  4. Be firm and consistent. If you give in to your children's requests all the time, you will never heard the end of it.Don't give in to your kids tantrum. You should never reward disruptive behaviour. If you reward the behaviour, your child will repeat the whole ordeal as they will learn that this is the way to get what they want.Children usually loose stem after five to 10 minutes.
